Yoga by Design has funded two programs for Freedom House, a temporary home for survivors of persecution from around the world seeking legal shelter in the United States and Canada. Their mission is to uphold a fundamental American principle, one inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty, of providing safety for those "yearning to breathe free."

Weekly classes offered to the residents of Freedom House who have fled torture, persecution, human trafficking in the hope of finding a safe haven and new life in this country. Most have endured unspeakable hardships and have PTSD.

Yoga reminds them that no matter where they are living their body is their home. Yoga gives them tools to manage their anxiety, fear, anger, insomnia. No matter the diversity of students and myriad of languages … we all share our breath and connection to the one heart we all share. Their resilience and joy at feeling alive and free in their body is a testimony to the insistence and persistence of the life within us all.

Yoga has helped me learn how to breath and relax. I found it very helpful to do yoga before I went on my big interview. Yoga has shown me how to built strength and how to deal with stressful situations. I would love to continue the yoga classes because I think it’s very beneficial.

Yoga has helped me learn to deal with stress and how to relax my body. I like the fact that it helps relax the mind and it has taught me how to use other body parts I have not been using. Now I use all of my body parts. If given the opportunity I would definitely like to continue yoga classes. I like the improvements I see within myself.

Yoga has helped me exercise my body and mind. It has helped me seek deeply within myself and my surroundings. It’s a very quiet movement of self realization for me. I love that yoga challenges me to go further. There are many exercises and movements I thought I was unable to do, but I try my best in class and succeed. I have learned to engage parts of the body that I have never used. I would definitely like to continue the yoga classes.
